Thanks to its iconic landmarks, world-renowned cuisine, and reputation as the most romantic city in the world, Paris is the world’s most popular tourist destination. It’s fairly popular with French citizens also.

Millions of domestic and international tourists arrive in the French capital every year. Many disembark at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Paris’ major airport, which is located 23 kilometers outside of the city center. A regular railway service runs from the airport to Gare du Nord station, France’s busiest railway hub.

Some visitors also arrive at Orly Airport (ORY), which is located 14 kilometers south of the city. Again, the airport is linked to the city center via a railway service. Visitors will also find that Paris is accessible via road from all of mainland Europe, as well as the United Kingdom. Rail links are available between Paris and some of Europe’s major cities, including London, Amsterdam, and Cologne.

Once in the city, visitors will find that there is a wealth of hotels and other accommodation options on offer. These include luxury and boutique hotels, youth hostels and budget hotels. Of course, this is the romance capital of the world so visitors will also find more than a few that offers the perfect romantic setting, especially those that look out over the city’s famed landmarks.

Perhaps the most famous of all of Paris’ landmarks is the Eiffel Tower. Standing 1,050-feet high, this iron structure opened in 1889 to celebrate the Universal Exhibition (or World’s Fair) and was originally to be a temporary structure. Such was its popularity, the tower was never closed or dismantled, and today remains one of the most visited sites in the world.

The tower was the highest structure in the world until the completion of New York’s Empire State Building in 1931. As such, it offers stunning views of the city, even if you only go up to the first level, which takes in 360 steps. From the second level or the third-level viewing gallery, visitors are able to take in almost all that Paris has to show.

It might be the most famous Paris landmark but the Eiffel Tower is not the most popular. That particular accolade goes to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame.

Sitting on the Ile de la City (Island of the City) at the very heart of Paris, Notre-Dame dates back to 1163. It took 175 years to complete the structure, but those 175 years were more than worthwhile. The magnificent structure is one of Europe’s true architectural delights, and must be seen to be appreciated. Visitors can make the 387-step trip up the cathedral’s north tower to enjoy more magnificent Parisian vistas.

Another famous Parisian church, the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur (Church of the Sacred Heart) can be found in the Montmarte district, which is accessible using the Metro (underground railway) service. This church sits at the highest point in Paris, offering fantastic panoramic views across the city.

The Arc de Triomphe (Triumph Arch) is another popular destination within the city. Sitting at one end of the famed Avenue des Champs Elysees, the164-feet tall structure is truly an iconic image of Paris. Visitors can ascend the tower, and again enjoy some fantastic views.

Sitting at the other end of the Champs Elysees is the Place de la Concorde, which is home to an Egyptian Obelisk from the reign of Ramesses II. The ancient feature was a gift from the Egyptian government during the nineteenth century.

Other popular Paris landmarks include the Pantheon, which serves as a final resting place for some of the city’s most famous residents; Sainte-Chapelle, another of Paris’ historic churches; the Palace of Versailles, which makes for an enjoyable day trip away from the city center; and the Hotel des Invalides, a former home for invalids that now serves as a selection of museums.

Museums are another of Paris’ great draws. The most famous, and without a doubt the most enjoyable, is the Musee du Louvre. The Louvre is the largest museum in the world and features historic relics and artifacts that cover almost the entire existence of planet Earth.

The museum’s most popular exhibits include the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa. The latter, which is smaller than most people imagine, sits behind a sheet of protective glass, which takes away from the mystique to a degree, but ultimately is still worth seeing. The museum’s Egyptian exhibits are also well worth a visit.

Other popular museums and art galleries include the Musee d’Orsay, which is housed in an old railway station; the Pompidou Center, which exhibits an extensive collection of modern art; and the Musee Picasso, which celebrates the work of famed artist, Pablo Picasso.

Whilst there’s no denying that history and culture make up a huge part of Paris’ tourist appeal, the city is by no means lacking in contemporary attractions. Visitors enjoying a stay in the city might enjoy a trip to Moulin Rouge (the Red Windmil) in the Montemarte district, a famous cabaret/burlesque venue recently brought to the big screen by Baz Luhrmann.

Those with younger children and plenty of time on their hands can visit Disneyland Paris, Europe’s only official Disney theme park. The park can be found in the northeast region of the Greater City Area. Alternatively, Paris Zoo makes for an enjoyable day trip. Located east of the city, the zoo is one of the largest in Europe and has a wealth of animal exhibits on display.

Those wishing to relax in the city can do so at any of the multitude of cafés that populate the Paris streets, while the likes of the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Jardin des Tuileries are both enjoyable green spaces. The latter sits on the banks of the River Seine, close to the Louvre. The boat trip on the Seine is an enjoyable event in its own right, particularly at night time when the likes of Notre-Dame are illuminated.

Of course, Paris is home to some of the best restaurants in the world, which makes dining after a long day of sightseeing a particularly easy task.

Once the day comes to an end, visitors will be able to rest comfortably as Paris is home to many hotels and other accommodation options that will enhance any stay.
