San Francisco Hotel Deals

San Francisco is one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America. Along the United States’ West Coast, only Los Angeles receives more visitors every year than the City by the Bay. This popularity stems from the city’s multicultural atmosphere and its numerous enjoyable attractions and landmarks.

Located approximately 550 kilometers north of Los Angeles, San Francisco is a popular destination for those driving the Pacific Coast Highway, which stretches from Orange County in the south to Mendocino County in the north. More adventurous travelers head further north to the Pacific Northwest and Canada beyond after a short stay in the city.

Most visitors however arrive at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), California’s second busiest airport behind LAX in Los Angeles. The airport is located 21 kilometers south of Downtown San Francisco, but is readily accessible using the Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) system, which provides regular train services to a variety of destinations within the city.

Once in the city, visitors will find a host of accommodation options available. Some of the more popular neighborhoods to stay in include Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf. Both are based in the northeast of the city in close proximity to San Francisco’s most popular sites. However, San Francisco enjoys one of the best public transport systems in the U.S., so hotels in other locations also offer easy access to landmarks and attractions.

Hotels in the city are suited to all travelers, including those looking for luxury accommodation, those searching for a budget deal, and those hoping for something in between.

All visitors, regardless of the accommodation they’re looking for, are able to enjoy the many magnificent sights and sounds on offer in the City by the Bay.

San Francisco’s most famous landmark is undoubtedly the Golden Gate Bridge. Opened in 1937, the suspension bridge crosses San Francisco Bay, connecting the city to Marin County in the north. The bridge is almost three kilometers in length and features six lanes for motor vehicles and two for pedestrians. Those wishing to enjoy the bridge in all its glory should take a stroll or bicycle ride across it.

A car trip across the bridge is also worthwhile in that it allows visitors to enjoy many of the best sites found in the Golden Gate National Recreation Park in Marin County. Here visitors can admire the ginormous redwood trees whilst enjoying a picnic, or visit the likes of the Muir Woods National Monument. Cyclists can also enjoy large portions of the park.

San Francisco’s next most popular attraction is Alcatraz Island. Located just off the north shore of San Francisco Peninsular, this island formerly housed a military base and later a federal prison. Between 1933 and 1963, “The Rock” as it became known, housed some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone and “Machine Gun” Kelly. The prison was also the site of a number of famous escape attempts. Officially none were successful but hang around long enough and you’re sure to hear stories to the contrary.

Today Alcatraz serves as a museum. Visitors can catch a ferry to the island – the journey itself is well worth the admission fee – from Pier 33 in the Embarcadero region of the city.

San Francisco is home to numerous museums and galleries, tackling a broad range of specialties. Visitors may enjoy a trip to the Maritime National Historical Park, which features a number of traditional sailboats. Alternatively, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art offers a host of interesting exhibits, while the Asian Art Museum and the Explanatorium – located at the Palace of Fine Arts – are also popular tourist haunts.

Visitors should be sure to take a ride on one of the city’s famous cable cars. Whilst queues can be quite long at times and the journey is relatively short, this is still a must on any San Francisco itinerary.

Other popular destinations within the city include Lombard Street, the so-called “crookedest street in the world”; the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, another fine arts museum; the Mission San Francisco de Asís, from which the city took its name; and the San Francisco War Memorial Performing Arts Center, which serves as a home to opera, ballet, drama, and other performance artists.

One of the features that makes San Francisco such an appealing city is its neighborhoods and general atmosphere. A popular destination with immigrants for more than a century, the city has taken a dash of every culture that has called the city home. The city’s Chinatown district is the largest outside of China itself, and an extremely popular choice with tourists.

Other popular neighborhoods include Japantown, which whilst not as big as Chinatown is equally as vibrant; Fisherman’s Wharf, home to some of the best eats in the city and a shopper’s paradise; and Union Square, home to San Francisco’s best fashion.

Families traveling to Northern California may enjoy a trip to San Francisco Zoo or the Aquarium of the Bay, housed within the Embarcadero district. Both offer the chance to see some terrific wildlife and marine life. The Presido, which is located close to the Golden Gate Bridge, also makes for an enjoyable place to rest, relax, or stroll, with the city as a backdrop.

Sports fans heading to the city will also be spoilt for choice. AT&T Park is home to the World Series-winning San Francisco Giants baseball club, while Candlestick Park is home to football’s 49ers. Across the bay, Oakland also houses three professional teams.

Those willing to travel a little further afield may enjoy a trip to the aforementioned Oakland, while nearby Berkeley and Palo Alto are both university towns with a relaxed field. San Francisco also offers the opportunity for travelers to enjoy a spot of winetasting at a number of vineyards and wineries in the region, with Napa and Sonoma particularly popular destinations. Alternatively, Yosemite National Park and Big Sur both make for enjoyable day trips.

San Francisco’s numerous hotels offer the option to enjoy all of this and much, much more.
